Elegant Bobby Pin Hairstyles

FX-2685_M_Large_Web_02Good Morning. I’m sitting here listening to the singing of the birds and hoping I can get this blog post done before my children wake up!   (I Didn’t make it!)

Today I wanted to share a few hair style ideas of what can be done using Lilla Rose bobby pins. This first one (pictured below) is one I did for a bride for her rehearsal dinner. This young lady has very thick, heavy, silky hair and has a hard time putting it all up. In fact in the past year or so since I have known her she has never had her hair up because it just won’t stay. (I’m working to change that with these marvelous products) Friday morning on the day of her rehearsal she came over and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do but I didn’t really have in mind that I would be putting it up but for some reason my fingers just started braiding  this side braid and before I knew it it all fell in place and with the help of a several bobby pins and some U-pins the braid was secured and it stayed ALL DAY! She was busy, busy, busy, all day with pre wedding prep and she was as delighted as I was with how lovely and secure it stayed!

Products used were  Copper Rose bobby pins and Copper Rose U-pins. I did not have enough bobby pins on hand and that is why I enlisted the help of the U-pins to give that extra hold her hair needed.

Pictured below is one of my first attempts at doing a fancy braid. I really did not know what I was doing when I did it… I just played and secured as I went with bobby pins and eventually this is what I came up. There are some plain Lilla Rose bobby pins hiding in there along with the Elegant Flower pins as my niece’s hair is also much too thick and heavy for just the two you see in the picture.

This is one of my favorite ways of using Lilla Rose bobby pins. This works very well for fine hair but may not be limited to that. First I gathered all her hair in a ponytail and then separated into 3 section like I would for a basic braid. Then I twisted those 3 sections and started winding them around the base of the ponytail and secured it with two  of the Copper Rose bobby pins. Simple, easy and pretty. It stayed all day and thats amazing for a very rambunctious 3 year old!

Here is another favorite way of mine to use bobby pins. I did a side twist on each side of her head and then secured them in the middle with one of those tiny rubber bands. Then I took those two tails that I ended up with and kept twisting them up and form them in a loose bun and secured everything with two Petite Dragonfly bobby pins, also from Lilla Rose. I really like doing the side twist on my daughter because her hair is very silky and lots of layers so these help secure a lot of strays. It is also much faster for me to do than braiding. Untitled design-19

Lilla Rose offers a nice selection of bobby pins with motifs as well as plain ones. They are not your ordinary bobby pin. I find them to be very strong with a tight grip. I have been very happy with the ways I have been able to use them and not have to use a whole lot to achieve my desired style. Please take a moment to check them out.

A little Bird Am I

Todays card reminded me of this poem that I found many years ago that blessed me greatly during a time of confusion and wrestling with my circumstances. God was faithful and brought me through those rough times. Looking back I didn’t really have that song on my lips always but as He is working in me and I get to know more I pray that it would become more and more a reality to me.

To Have and to Hold, Card Tutorial

Today’s card is one of my new favorites! I am having so much fun learning about and experimenting with flower shaping. Its still a very new thing for me so my flowers aren’t as gorgeous or realistic looking as some others I have seen out there but I still think they are beautiful and am pleased with the end results. I think my biggest challenge with the flowers is not the shaping itself but getting them colored and inked like I want or see in my mind. I’m determined to learn though and keep playing around till I can do it.

Well on to my card…  The finished size is 4.25×5.5. The products used in this project are:

  • White Card stock for base
  • Opal Pearl and Copper Pearl Cardstock , core’dinations
  • Arianna Blooms stamps and dies, Heartfelt Creations
  • Flower Shaping Kit, Heartfelt Creations
  • Arianna Lace Dies, Heartfelt Creations
  • Tempting Turquoise Ink, Stampin Up
  • Espresso Truffle, Momento
  • Turquoise Organza Ribbon
  • Jewel Stickers
  • Sponge Dauber
  • Double stick tape

Cut your card base from the white card stock 4.25×11 in. Score and fold at 5.5 and set aside. Stamp  the Arianna  Blooms image on the opal pearl cardstock. (3-4 times) Place the dies over the stamped images and run through your die cutting machine. Cut 3 of the smallest stamens and 1 of the next size up with the copper cardstock. Next cut out 3-4 of the swirls from the Arianna Lace die set with the copper cardstock.  With your sponge dauber add some extra color to both sides of your die cut images.

Next shape your flowers with the flower shaping kit. You can find a “how to” video here Glue together the layers of the flowers. The bottom two layers are shaped downward and the center petals I glued on upside down and shaped the flowers inward toward the center. Please watch the video for the instructions on how to do this if you are unfamiliar with it. Next glue on the stamen centers and adhere the jewel centers.

Take your card base and and add the ribbon, twisting and turning to give it volume and texture, adhering it with the double stick tape. Adhere your flowers and swirls with double stick tape or clear glue.

Stamp your sentiment on a piece of opal card stock  in espresso truffle ink and layer it with the copper cardstock. Adhere to your card. For a finishing touch embellish with a few more jewel stickers.

True Love Truffles

Today I was busy making truffles with a friend. We had a wonderful time chatting away a mile a minute, sharing life stories and adventures, learning from one another as we were stirring, dipping and sampling the sweet confections. The recipe is one I adapted from an old favorite and I must say that I’m glad we weren’t making them for ourselves because it would be sure to add an extra couple pounds where we would rather not have them.

I thought I would share my recipe here with you since chocolate and truffles are some of my favorite simple pleasures.

True Love Truffles

In a double boiler melt the chocolate chips. Add cream cheese and Andes mints and beat with a hand held mixer until smooth and creamy. The mixture will be very soft. With a rounded TBSP. scoop up the truffles mixture, leveling the top and drop onto parchment paper. You should have nice rounded mounds. When you have finished put them in the freezer until they are nice and hard. Meanwhile in the double boiler melt the chocolate bark and the unsweetened chocolate. Stick a toothpick in the bottom of the truffle and dip in the melted chocolate and then let the excess chocolate drip back into your pot. You can then slip of the truffle easily with a fork and place it on parchment paper to harden. *For the drizzle melt your white chocolate and place in a disposable cake decorating bag and have fun decorating your truffles. (I used a #2 writing tip.)

* I just added the white chocolate to my scraped but not washed pot to get the lighter brown chocolate look. You can use dark unsweetened or semisweet chocolate to get the darker drizzle.

For variations to this recipe you can omit the  Andes mints and add different flavors like 2-3 tbsp instant coffee or 3-4 tbsp peanut butter.

Brew your favorite cup of coffee and savor well…

How I Love Thee, Card Inspiration

Untitled design-7

Today I wanted to share with you a card I had a lot of fun making. I call it “How I Love Thee” because of the quote that I stamped on it from Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Valentines or romantic cards are more of a challenge for me usually. But I decided once again I would take up that challenge and see if I couldn’t come up with something of my own.

Supplies I used were

  • White card stock for base
  • Other Card Stock used was Chocolate Mocha and Vanilla Cream from core’dinations neutral pack and Opal Pearl which is also a core’dinations product.
  • Arianna Lace Die from Heartfelt Creations
  • Hardwood Stamp from Stampin Up
  • Sentiment Stamp is from Fiskers, Just Married Stamp set
  • Ink, Espresso from Momento
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, Barn Red
  • Burlap Ribbon with Red Hearts
  • Red Grosgrain Ribbon
  • White Brads

Untitled design-6

The few details that helped pull the card together were using the glimmer mist on the back ground and the on the two banners. It helped even out the color scheme of the whole card. Cutting out the heart from the ribbon and pairing it together with the Arianna Lace die-cut helped finish and bring everything together. Those were additions to the card after it had been laying around on my crafting table with a pretty incomplete look.  I also wanted to mention the white lace you see in the background is a cupcake holder but I think a doily or some other lace could easily take its place.

I hope this card is inspires you and gets your imagination going. If you have any questions please feel free to drop a comment below.

So Little Time

A new year, a new month… Time is moving right along at a pace much faster than I wish. Theres so many things I would like to do and so little time… or maybe its just not the right time to be doing all those things. With two little ones that love lots of attention from a Mama who likes to keep busy I often have to choose to put aside those “not all that important” things that would steal precious time from my girls. Even now as they are both napping I feel rushed to get some work done that just can’t be done when they are awake.  Things like working on this blog, making some birthday gifts, sewing projects I need to do for a friend, and taking care of my little side business.

Like most people with each New year “For me its a monthly, weekly and even daily thing” my heart often ponders “Is there something I want to change””How can I be the most efficient with my time?” “What can I do different today than yesterday?” “What worked and what didn’t last week?” “What do I really need to accomplish today?” With those questions and a bunch more I am constantly asking myself where I want to go and how I am going to get there. Its helping me to set goals. To be consistent. To not be afraid to change things around if something doesn’t work. To try things. To discard things. And slowly but surely its helping to change some life long ingrained habits that have been a big hinderance in my adult life.

Time… a gift…a blessing…that we have for such a short moment.  I want to use mine wisely. When I fail… I pray that God will give me the grace to see it and to look to Him to for wisdom and grace to make the best use of it that I can.
